Bootstrap Bill Turner was once a crew member of the Black Pearl under Captain Jack Sparrow. Jack was one of the few people who knew Bootstrap as William Turner. When Hector Barbossa led a mutiny against Sparrow and marooned him, Bootstrap did not participate. And when the crew got cursed by the Aztec gold, Bootstrap said they deserved it, and avenged Sparrow by sending a coin to his son, Will Turner. Barbossa, not taking this lightly, tied him to a cannon, which was thrown overboard. The crew and Barbossa, attempting to kill him, believed he would be lost to Davy Jones' Locker. It was later realised that the curse placed upon the Aztec gold rendered anyone who stole a piece as immortal and no of the living world. Bootstrap was stuck on the ocean floor, unable to move and unable to die, he would trade anything in exchange for his predicament. Found by Davy Jones, he swore oath to the Flying Dutchman to serve before it's mast for a time before being free. In The Curse of the Black Pearl, Barbossa seeks to find Bootstrap's descendant and the coin sent to him as it is the final one need to lift the curse, along with Bootstrap's blood, thus the requirement of his descendant, Will Turner. Due Bootstrap's current position aboard the Dutchman, he is placed under the Dutchman's Curse and not killed when his son lifts the curse of the Aztec Gold. In Dead Man's Chest, Jones sends him to the Black Pearl to remind Jack Sparrow about his debt to Davy Jones, and gives him the Black Spot. Eventually, Bootstrap is reunited with his son, Will, after a confusion when somebody shouts "Mr Turner," which could be either one of them. Bootstrap, stunned, drops something and, as punishment, has to whip Will on the back, rather than Jimmy Legs doing it. Nevertheless, Bootstrap helps Will gain the key to the Dead Man's Chest, although at the cost of surrendering his soul to Jones for eternity during a game of Liar's Dice. In At World's End, Bootstrap starts to become slightly delusional, after having a conversation with Elizabeth Swann in the Flying Dutchmans brig. Later, when Admiral James Norrington frees Elizabeth and her crew from the brig, a crazed Bootstrap alerts the crew and stabs Norrington, before Jones arrives. During Calypso's Maelstrom, Bootstrap, still delusional, fights Will, not recognising him. He later regains sanity when he sees Jones stab Will. He attacks Jones and nearly gets killed before Sparrow helps a weak Will stab the heart of Davy Jones. Since the Flying Dutchman needs a captain, Bootstrap carves Will's heart out and places it in the chest, thus making Will the captain of the Dutchman. Will frees the crew, but Bootstrap chooses to stay with his son on board the Dutchman.
